Used Parts for Used Cars

A good way to save money when doing minor repairs is to buy parts from a local auto wrecker. In my case I was looking at $230 for a rebuilt alternator, or $65 for a used alternator from my local auto wrecker.
The used alternator is thoroughly tested, and comes with a 90 day warranty. While that does not compare to the 3 year warranty of the rebuilt one, I could go through three used alternators before I spend as much as a rebuilt one.
New parts can be terribly expensive, and used or rebuilt parts not only help save you money, they also help the environment through reuse of parts in the case of used parts, and core components in the case of rebuilt ones.
While not all parts are ideal for purchasing used (anything involving rubber is probably best bought new), I have been able to save money on used parts like power window motors, alternators, body panels, radios, and brake brackets to name a few.
Not bad for a computer geek who is not particularly mechanically inclined.
